Kitty Litter Cake

This is exactly what you think it is.

If you are throwing a Halloween Bash this year, then friends, this is the ultimate cake for you.

I think this post is pretty self-explanatory and doesn't need much an introduction, but I will say this - this cake is a trick AND treat.

I have been waiting to make this the moment I saw it, but I just didn't think it was appropriate to make it any other day but Halloween. I mean, can you imagine making this cake for a retirement party? "Congratulations Dorothy on 35 Years of Service!" Better yet, a significant other's birthday? "Happy Birthday Darling! I made you a cake!" and present them with this? A tray full of kitty litter looking substance complete with some extra goodies nestled inside?

I'm pretty sure one would be in the doghouse - pun totally intended.

Aside from the look of it, it's actually delicious. Honestly. How could it not be? It has Oreos in it. And cake. And Tootsie Rolls. And Oreos. You just have to get past the look of it. Mind over matter people. Mind over matter.

For me, this is one kitty litter I am all too happy and willing to clean out.

And I don't even own a cat.

KITTY LITTER CAKE
Recipe adapted and slightly modified from Fab Food

1 box german chocolate or swiss chocolate cake mix, plus ingredients to make cake
1 box white cake mix, plus ingredients to make cake
1 package vanilla sandwich cookies, like Golden Oreos
1 large box vanilla instant pudding mix, plus ingredients to make pudding
A few drops of green food coloring
6-8 Tootsie Rolls
1 *BRAND NEW* litter box
1 *BRAND NEW* plastic pooper scooper
1 plastic kitty litter liner

Prepare and bake cakes according to directions on back of box. Prepare pudding mix according to box and chill until ready to assemble.

In a food processor, grind vanilla sandwich cookies into small bits, resembling course crumbs. Set aside all but ¼ cup. Place the ¼ cup cookie crumbs into a resealable bag, add a drop or two of green food coloring and mix until most of the bits are tinted green. This is to resemble chlorophyll in kitty litter. Set aside.

Once cakes are cooled, crumble both white and chocolate cakes into a large bowl and combine until it resembles potting soil.

Add vanilla cookie crumbs to the mix and stir. (Not the green tinted crumbs!) Add vanilla pudding in small increments. It's best to feel for consistency as you add it, you don’t want it soggy, just moist. Also, you will not use all the pudding. I eyeballed it and would guess I used about 1-1½ cups of pudding. Gently combine. Put mixture into clean litter box.

Place half the mixture into kitty litter box and apply pressure. Add the rest and fluff as it is being layered. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top.

Unwrap Tootsie Rolls and heat in the microwave for a couple of seconds until they are soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt and curve slightly. Scatter randomly over 'kitty litter'.

Serve with a new pooper scooper and try to enjoy!
